Located in St Johns County FL is the unincorporated seaside community called Ponte Vedra. Ponte Vedra is located just south of Jacksonville Beach, and just eighteen miles southeast of downtown Jacksonville and 26 miles north of St. Augustine. The area is known as Jacksonville Beaches consists of four beaches, they are Neptune Beach, Atlantic Beach, Jacksonville Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach.

In the early 1900's, this area was called Mineral City. In 1912, a vein rich with minerals was discovered running through the sand dunes. These minerals including rutile, ilmenite and zirconium, were found to be of tremendous value in the processing of steel.

These minerals played a major role in the area developing into a mining town with worker's facilities, post office and a general store. The minerals lead to the National Lead Company purchasing the town along with several thousand acres.

To keep the workers happy, the National Lead Company created a nine-hole company golf course, this facility would later become the world-famous Ponte Vedra Inn and Club. The mine was in operation until the end of the First World War.

When it became less profitable to extract minerals from the sand, the National Lead Company brought in the Telfair Stockton Company to begin real estate development of the site. The name was changed to Ponte Vedra to attracted visitors and potential real estate investors.

The developers offered initial buyers deep discounts to encourage development and a small, existing golf course was enhanced and developed into the Ponte Vedra Inn & Club.

In 1928, developers opened the now famous Ponte Vedra Inn Club. The club attracted the wealthiest families from all of Florida. They came for the sun, sand, and surf. They came for the sports and they came to socialize. The finest families came to meet other families of the same stature and this heritage continues today.

Due to the increased residential development, the State of Florida decided to complete the road from Jacksonville Beach south to St. Augustine.

By 1942, National Lead Company sold its interest in Ponte Vedra Beach to the Ponte Vedra Beach Corporation. The community rapidly developed into a year-round resort community with a permanent population. Today, Ponte Vedra Beach is considered one of the most luxurious recreational and residential locations in the country.

Golf and Golf Course Communities

Ponte Vedra, is home to the very large gated community of Sawgrass. Sawgrass is broken up into two main neighborhoods, Sawgrass Players Club and Sawgrass Country Club. This exclusive community is home to three country clubs showcasing four championship Golf courses.

Sawgrass Players Club

Sawgrass Players Club is also known as the TPC Sawgrass, this is a gated community located West of AIA, running along Tournament Players Championship Blvd. TPC Sawgrass is home to three championship golf courses, including The Ponte Vedra Golf and Country Club, TPC Sawgrass Club, which has the famous Stadium Course, as well as the Valley Course. The PGA tour headquarters and training center is also located inside TPC Sawgrass.

The Sawgrass Players Club also features, a tennis club and aquatic club, all residents also enjoy several community pools, playgrounds, parks, full size basketball court, volleyball court and other fields and amenities.

TPC Sawgrass community is broken up into 16 smaller individual subdivisions, these communities include, Salt Creek, Oakbridge, Cypress Creek, The Coves, Cypress Bridge, 7 Mile Drive, Sawgrass Island, Vicars Landing, Brightwater Island, Water Oak, Lake Side and Sawgrass Island. The area also includes the condo community called Players Club Villas, and two patio home / villa subdivisions called Turtleback Crossing and Bermuda Court.

Sawgrass Country Club

Located on the east side of A1A is the gated community of Sawgrass Country Club, this is a 1200-acre development which consists of 1409 homes. The development goes from the east side of A1A all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. The Country Club, was one of the first area of Sawgrass that developed through the 80’s.

This community is built around 27 holes of a picturesque championship golf course, split into three separate 9-hole courses. Over 50% of all residences inside the community overlook one of these three courses. The community also features a tennis club with 13 clay courts, a stadium court and 4 lighted courts. Just next door to the tennis facility is the fitness center, the fitness center includes a 25 yard 4 lane heated lap pool.

The Plantation

The Plantation is the only Equity Residential neighborhood in Ponte Vedra Beach, FL. This is a premier, all inclusive, intimate community where home ownership includes membership the golf course, private beach club, tennis facility, amenities park, fitness center and clubhouse complete with dining.

The community also includes 24-hour security, private mail service, library, and recycling center.
